How Is Cold Process Soap Made?

Cold process soap begins by combining oils and fats with an alkali, typically sodium hydroxide, also known as lye. When these ingredients are combined correctly, they undergo saponification and become soap.

Although lye is necessary to make traditional soap, a properly formulated and fully cured cold process soap is designed so that the lye is consumed during the soap-making reaction.

The soap mixture is poured into molds and allowed to harden before being removed and cut into individual bars.

But the soap isn't ready to use yet.

Why Does Cold Process Soap Cure for 4–6 Weeks?

One of the biggest differences between cold process soap and many other cleansing products is the curing period.

After the bars are cut, cold process soap typically cures for approximately 4–6 weeks. During this time, water gradually evaporates from the bars and the soap becomes harder and longer lasting.

That slow curing process is part of what makes handcrafted cold process soap so distinctive. It can't simply be made today and placed on the shelf tomorrow.

Why the Oils in Handmade Soap Matter

One advantage of cold process soap making is the ability to carefully formulate the oils and butters used in each recipe.

Different oils contribute different characteristics to a finished soap bar. For example, olive oil can contribute conditioning qualities, while coconut oil helps create cleansing power and lather. Butters and other plant-based oils can further influence the hardness, feel, and performance of the finished bar.

Rather than starting with a premade detergent base, the soap maker controls the formulation from the beginning.

Is Lye Used in Natural Soap?

Yes—and that's completely normal.

You cannot make traditional cold process soap without an alkali such as sodium hydroxide. Lye is the ingredient that reacts with oils during saponification to create soap.

Because raw sodium hydroxide is highly caustic, soap makers must use precise formulations, accurate measurements and appropriate safety procedures while making soap.

This is very different from the finished, properly formulated and cured bar that ultimately reaches the customer.

Cold Process Soap vs. Commercial Cleansers

Not every product sold for cleansing the body is made the same way.

Traditional cold process soap is created through saponification using oils and an alkali. Some commercial cleansing bars, on the other hand, are formulated primarily with synthetic surfactants and technically aren't traditional soap at all.

Neither format is defined simply by whether it comes in a bar. The formulation and manufacturing process matter.
